Typical duties
- Operating single needle, double needle, overlock, flat-lock and bar-tack machines
- Purse, handbag and leather-goods stitching — gussets, linings, zips, piping and edge binding
- Garment assembly to a sample or specification sheet
- Cutting, trimming, thread changing and basic machine adjustment
- Meeting piece-rate or line targets while holding the quality standard
- Sample making and pattern following where the grade calls for it
The trade test
A live machine test on the type of work the employer does: stitch a given piece to the sample within a time limit. Leather-goods employers watch edge finish and corner work closely.

It is stitching work in a leather-goods or accessories factory — purses, handbags, wallets and belts — rather than clothing. The machines and the technique differ from garment stitching, so employers test for it specifically.
Are there tailor jobs in Russia for Indians?
