Typical duties
- Install, service and repair split, package, ducted and VRF air-conditioning systems
- Chiller plant operation and maintenance — screw, scroll and centrifugal machines
- Gas charging, leak detection, brazing, compressor and condenser replacement
- Duct fabrication, insulation and grille or diffuser installation
- AHU, FCU and cooling-tower servicing, and planned preventive maintenance rounds
- Reading wiring diagrams, fault-finding on controls, thermostats and pressure switches
The trade test
A practical bench test: identify components on a live split or package unit, find an introduced fault, braze a joint, and explain the pressures and superheat you would expect. Employers who run chiller plants usually add a written questionnaire on refrigeration cycles and safety.

It depends on the employer. Many Gulf contractors accept solid hands-on experience with genuine experience certificates and a good trade test. Employers hiring for chiller plants, hospitals or oil-and-gas sites almost always insist on an ITI or diploma, because the certificate is checked at the time of the visa.
Is Gulf experience necessary?
It is an advantage, not a requirement. A candidate who has worked on the same equipment in India and passes the trade test is regularly selected — Gulf experience mainly shortens the settling-in period and can affect the grade the employer offers.
What is the difference between an AC technician and a chiller technician job?
AC technician roles cover split, package and ducted units in buildings, malls and villas. Chiller technician roles are on large central plants and usually ask for higher qualifications, plant-room experience and, sometimes, an electrical background as well.
