Typical duties
- Preventive and breakdown maintenance on production machinery
- Pump, gearbox, bearing and coupling replacement, and shaft alignment
- Hydraulic and pneumatic system service — cylinders, valves, hoses and seals
- Conveyor, chain, belt and roller maintenance
- Machining, fitting and basic fabrication support where needed
- Recording work orders and following lock-out / tag-out procedures
The trade test
A hands-on assessment: measure with a vernier and micrometer, identify bearing and seal types, demonstrate coupling alignment, and answer questions on lubrication schedules and safe isolation.

Employers use the words differently. "Fitter" usually means hands-on assembly and repair; "mechanical technician" often implies diagnosis, instruments and paperwork as well. The demand letter defines the grade, and the trade test decides which one you are offered.
What experience do European factories look for?
Polish and Russian manufacturers hiring Indian fitters generally want documented factory experience on production machinery, and they read the experience certificate carefully because it forms part of the work-permit file.
